The United States Government says itwill offer help to Nigeria in trackingbillions of dollars of stolen funds and
assets.
The government also said that the
United States’ military will offerassistance to Nigeria in the fightagainst Islamic militants.A White House statement says that thisis part of what is expected to featureduring discussion between Nigeria’sPresident, Muhammadu Buhari and U.S.President, Barack Obama in WashingtonDC.The cooperation between formerPresident Goodluck Jonathan and theUnited States government had virtuallygrounded to a halt over issues,including the alleged refusal ofJonathan to investigate corruption andhuman rights abuses.President Obama had long seen Nigeriaas arguably the most importantinfluential country in Sub-SaharanAfrica and had always been willing tohelp Nigeria in counter terrorismtraining.Since Buhari’s election, Washington issaid to have committed 5 million dollarsin new support for multi national taskforce to fight terrorism.This is in addition to 34million dollars ithad provided to Nigeria, Chad Cameroonand Niger for equipment and logistics.
