Delta State is Broke; Gov Okowa

Delta State is broke, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa
said yesterday.
The governor spoke in Asaba, the state
capital, at a briefing with lawmakers on the
state’s financial status.
Giving statistics on the state’s debt profile,
Okowa said Delta would need to run a monthly
deficit of “about N2 billion and would need to
borrow to pay salaries and finance the
running cost of government”.
With N637.2 billion owed to commercial banks
and outstanding contractual obligations, the
Okowa administration called for belt
tightening and understanding among
residents.
